Top Wreath Making Tips- How to Create a Stunning DIY Tropical Wreath

Not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but I can confidently say I know a thing or two about making a wreath. I mentioned this in my Instagram stories about this project, but since I moved into my first home about 10 years ago, I was obsessed with making wreaths. I literally made a new one every month- no exaggeration.

I have since calmed down, but I still enjoy creating a new wreath for every season, rather than every month. So, needless to say, over those years I've learned a thing or two, and in this post, I'll be sharing my top 5 wreath making tips with y'all!

Let's get started with tip numero uno!

Tip #1: Buy More than You Think You'll Need

I made this tip number one because it's crucial. You don't want to be laying out all your materials, start adding your greenery and flowers to your wreath and realize half-way through that you don't have enough. Buy more than you think you will need. Once your project is complete, you can keep what you didn't use for a future project or return the extra materials to the store.

Tip #2: Vary the Greenery

Just like landscaping your home, you want to vary the greenery in your wreath as well. When deciding what greenery you'd like for your wreath, remember to pick out different shades of green (or purples, neutrals, whatever look you're going for), different sizes and shapes and different textures. Doing this will add interest and dimension to your wreath.

Tip #3: Use the Right Tools

Those floral wires can be a pain in the booty to cut, so make sure you have the right wire cutters for the job. I originally had some craft wire cutters, but those quickly lost their sharpness and my husband, (witnessing me struggle while trying to cut the stems off), went to the garage and gave me actual wire cutters- game changer.

Tip #4: Lay Everything Out Before You Start

Once you've determined which leaves, stems, flowers, etc. you would like to use, it's time to cut them off the main stem and start laying them out on your wreath form (make sure you leave enough of the stem to weave into the grapevine and hot glue). Doing this first before securing and gluing everything into place will give you a chance to step back, take a look and easily rearrange if needed.

Tip #5: Size Matters

The big leaves will serve as the base of the wreath, and they will also help to cover up the grapevine wreath form (assuming you don't want it to show). Once you've secured the larger leaves, you can start sprinkling in the smaller stems and flowers as you go.

Size also matters when it comes to the actual size of your wreath. I personally think going bigger looks better on your front door. Having a wreath too small can look a little cheap. When you go bigger, it looks more luxurious. If you need a little help in deciding the size you should go, click here.

I hope these tips can help guide you while making your next DIY wreath, but remember, the key to a stunning wreath is to let your creativity shine. Don't be afraid to mix and match different materials, experiment with colors, and incorporate unique elements that reflect your personality and style. As you've seen from the steps and tips shared in this post, the process can be both simple and enjoyable, even if you're a beginner!

You can also share this fun project with family and friends, creating something together can be a great way to spend an afternoon (wine or coffee included). So, gather your supplies, put on some music or your favorite show and start crafting!
